The inspiration and style of Timothy's work came from his travels and scenes of nature. He said,
"Over the years I have been painting, I have developed a technique of extreme looseness, aiming at abstraction, but never achieving it. I push the paint around until something turns up. I cannot rationalise what I do; it is a mystery to me. So why do I do it? Certainly not as a relaxation! Nor as an escape from reality. I suffer many a mood of frustration and even despair before that possible moment of ecstasy, wonder or awe may arrive. It is like embarking on an adventure; a searching into unknown areas of reality. I find the experience exciting. I offer my works as a celebration of God's visual creation and human construction."

Canon David Stanton commented on Timothy's 2010 exhibition in Worcester Cathedral,

"[Vivian's] artistic skills reflect, in a deep and profound way, the divine beauty of creation, not least the importance and value that is given to each and every human being."
